The Israeli parliament marked the end of an era by voting in favor of a new government led by Naftali Bennett.
After 12 years in power, Benjamin Netanyahu is now in opposition.
However, there are still concerns about the new government’s stability. The same can be said for Netanyahu, who is unlikely to fade away into obscurity, despite the fact that he will have to reconcile his dreams for a comeback with his legal troubles at the same time.
Although the margin for error was small, the new alliance was able to get the necessary votes. Bennett of the Yamina party and Yair Lapid of Yesh Atid led 60 of the 120 Knesset members who voted in favor of the new administration (one abstention).
Bennett would continue in office until August 2023, according to the coalition agreement, which involves a rotation of the prime ministership.
According to Yaniv Voller, senior lecturer in Middle Eastern Politics at the University of Kent, ideological divisions are huge in the current cabinet, which came together solely for one purpose.
“The alliance was formed with one goal in mind: to end Netanyahu’s rule. Members of the alliance agree on one thing: Netanyahu has tainted Israel’s political system, according to Voller.
However, with only one goal in mind, future conflicts appear to be unavoidable. “Otherwise, this is a loose combination of many philosophies that will inevitably conflict at some point,” he continued.
