In a statement addressed to his boss, President Uhuru Kenyatta, Deputy President William Ruto urged individuals in positions of power to follow the law.
When Ruto met with political, religious, and community leaders from Uhuru’s Kiambu backyard, he declared, “Everyone who is entrusted with leadership must operate within the constraints of the law and uphold the Constitution.”
According to the DP, leaders must follow the rule of law and refrain from attempting to modify the Constitution to suit their needs.
He stated that when the interests of those in power collide with the Constitution, it is the leaders’ objectives that must be aligned with the law, not the other way around.
“The authority that Kenyans have bestowed on leaders should be utilized in accordance with the rule of law. “There are still people who feel that if their aspirations conflict with the Constitution, the Constitution should be amended to accommodate their agenda,” Ruto remarked on Thursday at his official Karen house.
“If your wants clash with the Constitution, it is your wants that should be modified to conform to the Constitution, not the Constitution that should be modified to suit an individual’s selfish interests.”
