Covid kills 25 people in a single day in Uganda, which is experiencing an outbreak of the disease.
Uganda has recorded 25 deaths, the highest number in a single day so far, bringing the overall number of deaths to 459.
According to figures released by the Ministry of Health on Tuesday, the country had registered a total of 64,521 Covid-19 cases and 48,480 recoveries as of June 13th. A total of 920 people have been admitted to hospitals across the country. The positivity rate stands at 21.5 per cent.
According to official figures, the country experienced 71 deaths in a single week.
Residents have become hesitant to follow preventive measures. This is according to Dr Charles Olaro, director of curative services at the Ministry of Health.
Experts say the infection rate has grown as the epidemic enters its second wave, putting pressure on the hospital system.
One infected person can infect 10 to 15 people, according to Dr Monica Musenero, the top presidential advisor on epidemics.
“The general situation is getting out of hand; there are places where the rate of infection is so high that if you picked any five people, two or more of them would be positive. Covid works by multiplying numbers,” Dr Musenero said.
“Our reproductive number (RO) is very high in that one person is generating 10 to 15 new cases instead of when one person generates only one case. That means the cases grow and we are reaching where Covid does its greatest havoc.”
